Stripes

I went to my guild meeting last night and it was quite fascinating. Patti Carey was the guest speaker. She is the marketing coordinator from Northcott, and she had a huge collection of quilts to show us. It was fascinating to hear talk about quilting from the business side and how the quilts she makes are used to showcase the fabric collections brought out by the company. Quilts are completed in 10 hours or less, and she told us she has 24 to get done in the next 3 weeks. She showed us this quilt she had made. The stars are actually from a striped fabric and cutting it on the bias gave her the strips already to be sewn together to make the lone stars. It was amazing.

She also had a fabric that had a large scale print on it. She made a block similar to a pinwheel with flying geese, and it looked very similar to a stack n whack. It was neat to see the movement in the quilt. She had another quilt that was simply squares with stripes as the sashing. She talked about how using stripes in a quilt can quickly change the look of a quilt. I have many of those fabrics in that quilt and the stripe she used. I would love to make my own version of that quilt.Now when I think about the time it takes me to make quilts, I will think of Patti and how quickly she has to get things done.

WIP Wednesday - Spools

 

I got behind on my Spools project, and now I am trying to catch up. I was using a Jelly Roll of Boutique, and wanted to add in some other fabrics so I set it aside while I got some other projects done and I came back to it this past weekend. I have the colours done now; I just need to turn a few more of them into Spools. I really hope to get this done soon. I love how it is coming together. October UFO Challenge - Blogtoberfest

This is my UFO Challenge for October. I am so cold right now that I wish I had a nice snowmen quilt to keep me warm. I had this on my list last year, and I got as far as having the squares cut out. It has been a while since I have done applique and I am looking forward to working on this project.

I have also joined up for Blogtoberfest being hosted by Kat at I Saw You Dancing. I will be posting each day for the month of October. Darlene inspired me with her sew each day in September for the National Sewing month. Here's hoping for a month full of sewing and blogging!

Christmas presents - UFO Challenge September 2012

 




This quilt was the start of my UFO fascination for the month of September. I had the blocks done and finished putting the quilt together over Labour Day weekend. Christmas is my favourite holiday and I love how well you can see the fabrics that make the presents. My UFO Challenge for this month is my Snowmen quilt. Design Wall Monday - Taffy

I may have diverted a bit from my originial plan of working on another UFO on Saturday. I grabbed the basket that the UFO was in, and went to retrieve the pattern. On my way to grab the pattern, my fingers happened to touch the Taffy pattern by Jaybird quilts. Last weekend, some of my LQS had sales on and so my daughter and I went out together. One of the stores had a bowl where you could pick out your discount and my amazing daughter picked out 40% off. They let me go back and pick up a Shape Cut Ruler. Somehow I had broken mine, and I use it all the time. At the other store, they had amazing grab bag sales for $5.99. My daughter and I filled a couple of bags, with large scraps that were more the size of fat quarters. The store also had fabric on sale too. I found a cool fat quarter of Sunflowers and Leaves. Last year, my great-aunt (who loves sunflowers) told me that her quilt that I had made for her was getting worn out, and she needed another one. Her first quilt I had made using Full Sun, by Maywood Studios. It was a subdued palette of blues and golds.When I bought the fat quarter I knew I wanted to use it as a focus fabric, and I had a few ideas in mine. Then when I saw the Taffy pattern I realized how well it work with the fabric. I did some in home shopping, checked with my dh about colour scheme and I was on my way.

FNSI - Christmas Rose

 

I got another quilt top done for my Friday. Night Sew In. I put on the inner border last weekend and the outer border added the finishing touch. It looks like the Christmas Rose quilt may be ready for Christmas and now I have one more quilt off of my 2012 UFO Challenge list. I had it laid out this morning and my son came by and told me what a nice quilt it is.  He is such a sweetheart! Hopefully, I will get a chance to work on another quilt top this weekend.

TGIFF- Abducted

Well, I have been abducted by aliens! Specifically ones with UFOs. Since Labour Day weekend, at the start of September I have gotten 3 1/2 of my UFO turned into tops. I really am trying to get most of my 2012 UFO Challenge quilts done by December. Here is one I finished this week.

 

This is my Plan C quilt by Miss Rosie's Quilt Company. It really was a Plan C quilt because I tried 2 different patterns with this fabric until I found this one that I liked the best.  Tonight for the Friday Night Sew In, I am hoping to get my 4th top finished.
