Friday Night Sew In -Placemats

 

My Friday Night Sew In was spent starting on some placemats for my Mom for her upcoming birthday. It came as a kit with a diagram on how to cut the shapes and sew back together. I got one of the tops done. I am going to make them first and then trim them to the same size.

B is for ..

1. Plan B

Well, I was making my School's out quilt I had shown it to a friend who really liked it. When I had to go to my Plan B for the quilt. I had a lot of blocks left over so I decided to make him a placemat. I gave it to him yesterday and he was very pleased with it.

I got inspired by Penny's quilt as you go tutorials so I decided to try it out with the placemat. I really liked it. I did do a bit of quilting after the block was put together as well.

2. Butterfly Blooms

I ended up giving myself half a day off last Thursday before I started on a new project.

This is a kit that I bought from Crazy4Quilts that I have had for a couple of years. I got the cutting all done for it and am looking forward to putting it together. It is going to be for my niece.


3. Birthday

Today is my son's birthday. I love him so much and I am so proud of him. He has taught me so much.

Charmed ....

I'm sure! Here is part of the reason, why I have not been in to much of a rush to catch up in the 9 patch quilt along. I splurged and bought myself a few charm packs. These came in the mail yesterday. A month ago, I bought one and really liked using it, until I realized I could only get 4 squares from each 5 inch square. Rather than making it scrappy, I decided with your advice to use yellow in the centre so they look a bit like flowers. Using the charm packs has been a great way to try out lots of different fabrics in one quilt, rather than have to make lots and for little cost. I am eager to start cutting these up and seeing the 9 patches I create with them.



By the way, here is my finished place mat. The fabric is Sunshine by April Cornell for Moda and the backing is leftover fabric I had from a quilt I made for my aunt. It is all the provincial flowers of Canada.

What a difference ....

A year makes. Last year around this time I was just finishing up my first guild quilt show. The guild had asked everyone to make something that could be sold in the boutique. I started making a baby change pad based on a pattern by Eleanor Burns. Well, I was so worried about it being perfect, that it became less perfect. It was my first year with the guild and I did not know how well my quilting would look against anyone else's. I ended up not finishing the project. Fast forward to this year. Tonight is my guild's dinner and they have asked us to go green. We are to bring our own place mat as well as dishes. Well I took out the old change pad and pared it down to a place mat size. I was up at 6:00 this morning quilting it. I am not going to get a chance to bind it before the meeting, but I don't care. I am taking it anyhow.
